Our History

Three Decades of Legal Practice, Built on Justice and Conviction

Founded in 1991, EMV Law Firm began its journey in the heart of Mylapore, Chennai, from the vision and determination of Mrs. R. Maheshwari. What began as a sole legal practice at Krishnaswamy Avenue has, over more than three decades, evolved into an established and multi-disciplinary law practice, while remaining firmly rooted in the principles upon which it was founded.

From its very beginning, the Firm was guided by a simple but powerful belief: legal solutions must be accessible to those in need, and justice must be pursued for all.

  1. 1991

    The Beginning — 1991

Mrs. R. Maheshwari commenced her legal practice in 1991 after her legal education at the renowned Madras Law College, an institution with a distinguished legacy of producing eminent lawyers and judges.

She began her practice before the Madras High Court, initially focusing on civil and corporate law. From the outset, her approach to advocacy was shaped by determination, preparation and an unwavering belief that every legal problem deserves to be approached with the objective of finding a solution.

At the heart of her philosophy was a conviction that continues to guide the Firm to this day:

    Nothing is impossible.

For Mrs. Maheshwari, advocacy was never merely about appearing in court. It was about using the knowledge, skill and arguments of a lawyer as an instrument through which a client could seek and obtain justice.

  2. 1995

    Growth and Expansion

By 1995, the Firm had entered a new phase of growth. From 1996 onwards, additional advocates began joining the practice, gradually transforming what had begun as a sole practice into a growing legal establishment.

The Firm's presence expanded around the Madras High Court and its surrounding legal district. Chambers at the High Court, including Chamber No. 180, and the office at 168, Thambu Chetty Street, opposite the High Court, became important parts of the Firm's professional journey.

The original premises at Krishnaswamy Avenue, Mylapore, continued to serve as a conference and meeting office, retaining a special place in the history of the Firm.

  3. 2002

Expanding the Practice — 2002 Onwards

The year 2002 marked another important stage in the Firm's development. Its practice expanded beyond its original areas, with the Firm progressively developing experience across a wider range of legal fields.

The Firm's work increasingly encompassed varied areas of litigation, advisory practice and legal representation, allowing it to serve a broader spectrum of individuals, businesses and corporate institutions.

From 2007 onwards, Mrs. R. Maheshwari also served as a Senior Central Government Standing Counsel, continuing in that role until 2015. This period represented an important chapter in the Firm's professional development and further strengthened its experience in matters involving government and public law.

  4. 2008

    Corporate Practice and Institutional Growth

From approximately 2008 onwards, the Firm further expanded its engagement with the corporate sector, advising, media and representing companies and institutions alongside its established litigation practice.

This expansion reflected the Firm's ability to evolve with the changing needs of its clients. While its foundations remained firmly in courtroom advocacy, the practice increasingly embraced corporate, commercial and advisory work.

  5. 2015

    A New Professional Base — 2015

In 2015, another significant milestone was reached with the establishment of the Firm's larger office at Adyar, Indira Nagar, Chennai.

The new office represented not merely an expansion of physical space, but the continuing evolution of a practice that had grown from a single advocate's chambers in 1991 into a broader professional establishment.

Yet, despite this growth, the Firm retained the values with which it began.

  6. Today

    A Legacy Built on Conviction

Over the years, EMV LAW FIRM has grown in experience, scope and professional strength. Its journey has taken it from a sole practice in Mylapore to a wider legal practice with a presence in and around the Madras High Court and an established office at Indira Nagar.

Through changing times, changing laws and changing forms of legal practice, one principle has remained constant:

Justice is the purpose. Advocacy is the instrument.

The Firm believes that a lawyer's responsibility extends beyond simply presenting a case. It lies in understanding the client's circumstances, identifying the legal solution, presenting the strongest possible case and pursuing the client's legitimate interests with commitment and integrity.

The philosophy of its founder continues to define the Firm:

Nothing is impossible when the law is understood, the case is prepared and the cause is pursued with conviction.

Looking Ahead

Today, more than three decades after its establishment, EMV Law Firm carries forward the legacy of its founder while continuing to adapt to the demands of modern legal practice.

The Firm looks towards the future with the same commitment with which it began in 1991 — to provide sound legal solutions to those who seek them, to stand firmly for the rights and interests of its clients, and to pursue justice with knowledge, preparation and conviction.
